The Possible Side Effects of Porcelain Veneers Treatment
February 13, 2025

Veneers are a durable, beautiful way to transform multiple aspects of your smile in one convenient treatment. But while this procedure is usually very well tolerated, there is still a small chance that you may experience some side effects. Here are a few things to watch out for, and what you can do if you experience them.
Tooth Sensitivity
Tooth sensitivity is one of the most common side effects of veneers, because your dentist must remove a small amount of enamel to ensure that they fit properly. This is usually temporary, however in some cases it can last several weeks or months after treatment. If it has been six months and your teeth are still feeling sensitive, be sure to follow up with your dentist, as this could be a sign of a serious problem such as an injury to a tooth nerve.
Color Irregularities
Though shade mismatches are not common, in some rare instances the edges of your natural tooth may be visible along the sides of your veneer, making it look different colored. It is also sometimes possible for the cement holding your veneer on may become discolored over time, however this could take several years before it becomes an issue.
Gum Tissue Adjustments
Minor gum inflammation and sensitivity is somewhat typical following the installation of veneers, but this is temporary and should clear up after a few days. If it has not, mention it to your dentist at your follow-up appointment.
Discomfort
Some patients experience minor discomfort during the veneer installation procedure; however, it typically is minimal and goes away shortly after. If you are concerned about pain, speak to your dentist in advance about taking a pain reliever prior to treatment.
Increased Trauma Risk
Though rare it is possible during veneers treatment for some pulp of the tooth to die. If you are concerned about this or about sensitivity from veneers, you may be better off choosing a dental crown as a treatment instead of a veneer.
Remember, while side effects from veneers are extremely rare, they are still possible. Your dentist can help go over these risks and help you decide if this treatment is right for you. If you have any questions or concerns, be sure to bring them up at your consultation, so you and your dentist can work together to find a solution for your beautiful smile!
