As you start 2025, maybe you’re considering dental implants for your smile. It wouldn’t be a surprise; these prosthetic teeth are effective and can seamlessly restore any grin. Having said so, you likely want to know whether the posts are safe before you get them. Well, good news – your Flint implant dentist is here to answer that very question! Just keep reading to learn about dental implant safety and how to make treatment even safer.

Are Dental Implants Safe?

Though placing them is tricky, rest assured – dental implants themselves are very safe. They shouldn’t harm your teeth, gums, or other body parts.

Firstly, note that dentists take precautions with dental implants. They consult you beforehand to ensure the posts won’t cause oral health issues. Furthermore, they’ll perform an oral exam to ensure your gums and jaw can properly support implant posts. They would never proceed with treatment if they believed it would harshly damage your body.

The actual dental implants are also harmless. Because they use non-toxic materials (titanium, ceramic, etc.), the posts don’t cause negative health effects. They’ll just slowly (but surely) fuse with your jaw, strengthening your jawbone and keeping your other teeth straight.

What About Implant Surgery’s Risks?

The risks of dental implant surgery aren’t anything to worry about. While they do exist, they’re very uncommon and easy to manage with dental care.

Even at their worst, dental implant surgery’s risks are small. They’re usually just issues like bleeding, slight infections, and allergic reactions. A poorly placed implant could damage a nerve and make your mouth feel numb, but that scenario is unlikely. The same goes for foreign body rejection, which could cause pain at the implant site.

Of course, dentists are still prepared if something goes wrong with surgery. They can usually address any complications quickly and smoothly.

How to Make Dental Implants Safer

Dental implant treatment is pretty safe already, but you can work to make it safer. Just implement the following tips and tricks:

  • Get an Excellent Dentist – If possible, choose an implant dentist with advanced training and experience. They’ll likely perform implant placement successfully and properly maintain your implant posts.
  • Share Your Medical History – Remember to share your medical history with your dentist beforehand. That way, the dental team can better plan your treatment and ensure its success.
  • Care for Your Dental Implants – While artificial, dental implants need regular care to work. Please brush twice daily and floss once daily to reduce your risk of implant failure.

So, are dental implants safe? Absolutely – just talk to your dental provider to see for yourself!
